This run is a true test of your physical endurance and technique with a mixed terrain of trail and tarmac in Sangla Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Sangla Ultra Marathon is a splendid high altitude run, starting from quaint little village of Rakcham going all the way up to the Border village of Chitkul-the last Indian village on the Indo-Tibet border sitting pretty at an altitude of 12,000 feet and then coming down to Sangla Village and going back to Rakcham. You will truly relish and appreciate the awe of raw virgin nature as you pass through the Rolling Meadows with colorful wild flowers, narrow iron bridges fluttering with Bhuddist colorful prayer flags over cold gushing streams, lush green valley with apple orchards and traditional wooden houses, pine forests against the imposing backdrop of the snowcapped mighty Kinner Kailash Range of Himalayas and Baspa river meandering in between the mighty mountains and so on the untouched beauty of the place unfolds itself! The Baspa Valley through which gushes the Baspa River highlighting the snow-clad rocky mountain also known as Sangla Valley is a delight if you are an aficionado for appreciating the wonders of nature especially the stretch after Sangla Village, full of apple orchards and wooden houses with a strong confluence of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Follow arrows marked on rocks, past dense forests, rolling green meadows and waterfalls. Tip-toe on wooden planks to cross gushing streams. Follow shepherds herding their goats or surprise yourself with the yak grazing lazily along the dusty road.
Chitkul is practically the last point of the famous Kinnaur Kailash, abode of Lord Shiva. Rumor had it that the region’s most beautiful young girl lived in the far-flung village of Chitkul.Chase that feeling and remember that the journey is far more enjoyable than reaching the destination….
Life in this Himalayan village seems slow but beauty of it is wrapped up in W.H. Davies’ words:
